Kitchen: Counter Tops – Steps 7 & 8 – Second and Third coats of color
After being thrilled with the first coat of color, we went about applying the second coat. We let the first coat dry about two hours.
Again with the 8oz mocha – as I wanted a dark dark brown finish.
Second and Third Coats Ratio: 1 part untinted Component 1 Acrylic Solution to 1 part Component 3 Powder Mix. (1 quart per 1.4 pound jar.) Again, figure higher on the square footage a bit, and don’t forget to figure in the edges and the back splashes.
Again we mixed the color in the pitcher and poured it onto the counter for application. The second and third coats were even thinner than the first, and a little hard to work with using the trowel. We opted to switching to paintbrushes entirely – high-quality 4 inch paintbrushes.
Using sweeping strokes, we applied the second coat over the first, using the glare from the windows to see where we applied and where we didn’t. The color is very dark, thus we had to keep looking for our wet edges.

We allowed the second coat to dry for about two hours.
The third coat was more of the same.
