Counter Top Gallery and Q&A
Click this link to see our Counter Top Slideshow and Gallery on Flickr. It has more photos than the blog entries here, and shows the good, bad and ugly.
If you have a question about our experience with Skimstone, please reply to this post and we’ll answer as soon as we can. Thanks!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with Skimstone…. I recently saw the Design on a Dime episode that featured this technique.
I have a couple of questions for you, if you wouldn’t mind:
1) how did the actual finish color of your countertop compare to the sample color by Skimstone? It looks pretty close in your pictures, but sometimes pictures are hard to really tell.
2) how does the countertop feel? Does it feel substantial like concrete?
3) would you do it all over again, given the choice?
Thank you so much again!
Meghan

The countertops look really good. Are you happy with them? Did you apply any kind of wax over the sealer or are you planning to?
I just order skimstone to do our countertops. They look to be the same as yours originally, but with rounded finish. We are doing ours with two colors in eggplant and slate and i am still thinking about the depth of color I would like to try to achieve. I found your blog after I placed the order, but looking at your pictures I feel encouraged.
How many days did it take you to do this? Do you have any final tips?

Hello Meghan! To answer your questions:
1. I think the color was exact. Again, we used three of the same color (8 oz Mocha). If I were to do it again, I might want to mix the colors, but for my first try, the color is a very deep, rich brown, like the sample. If anything, the color may be a tad darker than the sample Modern Masters provides.
2. It’s not super-smooth – so it’s bumpy in spots, but it feels like stone or cement. Last night as I was unpacking more boxes (I hate moving), and got out my cast iron cookware, and i set it on the counter and even dragged it across the surface. The counter held up just fine. I tihnk it not only looks substantial, but yes, feels that way.
3. Yes, we’d do it again. I am actually considering taking the class to learn how to get a smoother finish surface (Though I’m sure this is partially because the primer was getting dry and we weren’t moving fast enough). I think it would be nice to learn how to do the “inlay” and patterns like Modello (http://www.modellodesigns.com/). I also found it very fun to do – though time consuming and a bit tiring.
I am considering doing our patio this fall or next spring with an overlay of Skimstone. And maybe our laundry room floor… and maybe the guest bath vanity.
So, yes, I’d do it again!
