Anatomy of a Room: The Project Room (Guest Room #2)

Posted on 7th July 2008 by Amelia in: House

Working on the guest bedrooms before I have guests, and before the house hotting party in August.

I picked this up for the 2nd guest room – a sideboard on clearance at JCPenney. This is the room where we’ll house the project stuff like my sewing machine, Mike’s camera equipment, etc… the project room. I thought a sideboard would be a good choice because I can use it to store fabric and supplies for sewing. I was going to use one of the fantastic walnut dressers I just picked up from craigslist (photos to come), but figured this would be a better fit for the room’s purpose.

While it doesn’t match with my uber affordable (read: $33) desk I picked up from the as-is at IKEA (this one), I think the darker tones in the sideboard will be ok with the desk, I hope. Either that or I’ll do a cool shelving around the windows using a dark color and the lighter color.

This room has 2 windows on a south-facing wall – so it gets TONS of light, I mean it’s almost TOO bright. So, I had an idea about using IKEA’s Lack shelving. So, under the windows, low – 2 of these, horizontal, running nearly the entire length of the wall. And again, this time framing around the windows with the same shelving, vertically, and then cutting down another shelf to top them off, so there would be shelving around the windows. Then I’d mount the curtain rods inside the shelving that would go around the windows to hang inside…. so they look inset.

So the shelves, along the floor, and up around – like my crude drawing, here…

I’m doing bright white trim, curtains and leaving the bright-blue walls. Yeah, the bright blue walls that were here. Now to figure out what to do after I take down the snowboard wallpaper border. I HATE wallpaper border.
