Kitchen: Counter Tops – Step 2 – Applying the first coat of Bonding Primer

Once things were prepped, we prepared to start the first coat of the Skimstone bonding primer (2 coats, total).

We purchased the bonding primer in gallons – they arrived like paint cans – and just as heavy. Make sure you have a paint stick on hand to mix the bonding primer to prevent the top material from getting too dry in the can as you work.

The consistency of the bonding primer was a thick, sandy mixture. The Skimstone instructions state to use a trowel to apply the bonding primer in a thin layer (1/32 of an inch), applying it at a 45 degree angle. We started using the trowel, but found it very difficult to work with. We ended up using the trowel to hold extra bonding primer as we were applying the bonding primer with a putty knife.

Kitchen: Counter Tops – Step 1 – Prepping the area for Skimstone

And so it begins – the process of refinishing the laminate counter tops with Modern MastersSkimstone product.

Product arrived quickly from The Hardware City and we began prepping the kitchen for the Skimstone application.

First, we removed the sink. It’s definitely a two person job. The stainless steel sink was set aside in the garage.

A fantastic house with a fantastic kitchen deserves fantastic counter tops.

During the home buying process, we knew that eventually we would have to redo the kitchen counter tops. The current counter tops weren’t bad, per say – but they are a green laminate. Square edges, with a matching back splash. There was a small spot near the sink where the counter top had split from the back splash.
